WHY YOU SHOULD TRAVEL SOLO

“I was never going to go if I waited for someone to come with me”

As we get older, priorities in peoples lives change and things like money, houses, work, children and families take over. While there is nothing wrong with that, planning a holiday around other people can become so exhausting you start to wonder why you should even bother.

This has taught me if I wait for other people to get their funds together, book the ticket, organise their life etc etc – I’ll never get anywhere.

I have travelled with friends before and there has been nothing wrong with it, in fact, I loved it. However for the last 3 years any holidays I’ve taken have been on my own, on my terms and within time periods that work for me and I feel at this stage, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Over the years I have walked the streets of New York, awkwardly tried to order a coffee in a french cafe and I’ve hiked steep hills in 100% humidity in Singapore without anyone by my side. These scenarios have given me a confidence and liberating feeling traveling with people wouldn’t have given me. Being someone who has always been quite introverted, this has given me a confidence boost to realise anything is possible and everything will work itself out.

Here are some of the things I’ve learnt from travelling on your own over the years

  • You get to see the things YOU want to see
  • You push yourself to meet new people – I now have a great group of friends in London for this exact reason
  • You realise doing things on your own is ok
  • You gain a great sense of accomplishment knowing everything you organised, you organised yourself
  • Its never as scary as you think
  • Once you travel alone, you will want to do it again

  1. I have been travelling alone for the last 2 and a half years and never feel the urge to stop. It’s good to have a travel mate every now and then but travelling alone has given me so much in term of developing myself and my way of seeing things. It’s def not scary as long as you are confident about it. It’s great to hear that you are enjoying yourself as well. Safe travels!!!
